Sukhna Lake

Sukhna Lake is a lovely lake in Chandigarh, lying at the foot of the Shivalik Hills. Sukhna Lake is a man-made lake that spans 3 square kilometres and is the city’s only one of its kind. It was created in 1958 when the Shivalik Hills’ seasonal Sukhna Choe (Stream) was dammed.

The lake, which is L-shaped and fed by rains, is only 3 sq km in size. The Sukhna Choe had formerly discharged its waters directly into the lake, extensively silting it. Over 25 square kilometres of land in the lake’s catchment area were purchased and afforested to avoid additional silting. A continuous stream of morning joggers and walkers flock to the lake, enjoying the fresh air as well as the beautiful blue water.

This lake, according to Le Corbusier, the creator of Chandigarh, India’s first planned city, will be the centre of people’s wellness activities. And that is why this place must be on your bucket list when you are searching for tourist places in Chandigarh.
